How to Brown Butter

I have a couple recipes in the works which call for brown butter so naturally a tutorial on how to brown butter is a must! Brown butter is melted butter that when slowly cooked on the stove brings out a nutty flavor. You won’t be disappointed when using brown butter to elevate any dish; sweet or savory! Think cookies, cakes, buttered popcorn, lobster dip, anything!

Don’t be intimidated by this technique. Initially I was! I thought surely I would burn the butter every time. I did burn it a couple times but not many and with some practice I have the confidence to well… do a post on it! Ha!

So let’s jump into it! We got some chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls and cream cheese frosting recipes coming that will need this deliciousness. Be on the look out for those recipes coming out soon; in the meantime let’s work on browning this butter!

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter

Brown Butter Directions

  1. Cut your butter into equal pieces; I cut mine into tablespoon size more or less. The equal sized pieces allow for the butter to melt evenly.
  2. Place the butter pieces into a lightly colored pan. A light colored pan allows you to see the browning of the butter as it occurs. It is difficult to see the brown bits in a dark pan.
  3. Turn the heat onto medium to medium low.
  4. Constantly stir the butter in the pan to keep the heat even and the butter from burning or spattering.
  5. Once the butter melts it will start to foam and little white milk specks will start to separate; these are the bits that will brown. Keep stirring for about 5 – 8 more minutes. The milk specks will start to brown on the sides and bottom of the pan.
  6. The foam will subside a bit and you have browned butter. Pour the butter into a heat proof dish to stop the browning process (which may lead to burning if left in the pan) and allow the butter to cool to your desired temperature.
  7. Use as you like!

Storing Brown Butter

Keep the brown butter in a dish on the counter for up to 5 days, in the refrigerator for 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Green in the Kitchen

I try my best to be as green as possible in the kitchen using organic ingredients and using tools that can be handed down through the generations and/or are sustainably made.  I am always on the lookout for products that support this vision.  Though not perfect I still have tools that are not completely in line with this vision; however, I look forward to taking great care of them and using them as long as possible so they stay out of landfills.  Once they have reached their end of life I look forward to introducing an eco-friendly version to the home.

I also look forward to sharing with you what can be composted from each dish so less food waste is sent to landfills.  If you have an opportunity to use the unused portions of ingredients in another dish all the better but if you don’t have plans for… let’s say, that whole head of lettuce YOU CAN COMPOST IT!

What Can Be Composted From This Dish?

Hmmm… the only ingredient is butter and I hope you use it all before it goes bad! 😉 Recipes that call for brown butter are coming soon so subscribe for email updates!
