How to Make a Holiday Wreath

Every year I make a Holiday Wreath with the extra branches from our Christmas tree. I have done wreaths with Christmas tree all around the hoop, with bells and elves; really whatever I am feeling at the time. This year I wanted to keep it really simple. Seemed appropriate with the year we have all had; life has been crazy with lock downs, curfews, masks, social distancing, you know! So a busy over the top wreath just didn’t feel right to me. Keeping it simple is the theme for this year as this year has allowed me to think about what is really important. And all the frivolous extra stuff is just not important.

Let’s get started and have some fun!

Holiday Wreath Directions

Find a flat surface to work on. Turn on the hot glue gun and have it at the ready!

Cut a couple branches off your Christmas tree.

  1. This is where the garden shears come in handy. We always have to cut a couple branches off at the bottom of the tree so we can fit it in the stand, these are the branches I use to create the wreath.
  2. Get out the metal hoop; find the seam of the hoop so it can be covered. Start placing the branches in your preferred pattern on the lower half of the hoop so you have an idea of where to place everything.
  3. Cut the branches if needed so they fit nicely on your wreath.

How to attach the branches around the hoop

  1. Place one branch on the hoop, line it up so there are a couple points where the hoop and branch intersect.
  2. Turn the hoop and branch over so you can work on attaching the branch from the back.
  3. Use the fishing line to secure the branch to the hoop. Where the branch and hoop intersect tie the fishing line in a knot around the two pieces.
  4. Pull the fishing line taut so the branch is flush with the hoop.
  5. Dab a bit of hot glue on to the knot and let it sit until dry.
  6. Repeat as many times as you like.

Attach the next branch and repeat the steps above. Continue to add and secure your branches until you have all the branches you like.

Add the Bling

I decided to keep the Holiday Wreath really simple this year and added a modest bow to complete the look. However, you can get really creative and add bells, ornaments, stars, etc…. Just remember you cannot hot glue anything directly to the hoop as it will not stick. But you can use hot glue to attach to the Christmas tree branches and use the fishing line method as well to secure your additional bling.

What Can Be Composted From This Craft?

All the leftover Christmas tree branches can be composted. All compost piles should have 50% dry and 50% wet materials to keep it decomposing properly with minimal stink and interest from pests. Happy crafting!
