Felt Flower Ribbon Wreath

felt flower ribbon wreath

Walking through Michael’s looking for wooden plaques (for another craft I’ll share soon) I came across this fall inspired ribbon and knew I had to make a Felt Flower Ribbon Wreath. For no other reason than it would be beautiful! And it is! One of my favorite crafts that came from out of no where and it’s easy too.

During the video I kept calling this a Fall Harvest Wreath but upon further research that name didn’t seem to fit anymore. So let pretend I call this craft a Felt Flower Ribbon Wreath the whole time! Fall was my inspiration but it can be made for any occasion, season or colors that make you happy. I’d love to see what you create; please tag me on Instagram or Pinterest (@home.marisa)!

What Can Be Composted From This Felt Flower Ribbon Wreath?

If your felt and ribbon are made of organic materials, like wool or silk, you can compost the scraps. Thick heavy pieces of felt don’t compost well but if your pieces are small or thin throw them in there.

Let’s talk about the foam flower hoop and the impact on environment. First, foam floral hoops are plastic. Plastic breaks down to microplastics and contaminate our waterways and planet. It is unknown how long plastics actually take to biodegrade. The estimates have been up to 500 years according to this WWF article.

Let’s take a look at some facts from a National Geographic article (2019):

“Plastics by the numbers

Some key facts:

  • Half of all plastics ever manufactured have been made in the last 15 years.
  • Production increased exponentially, from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 448 million tons by 2015. Production is expected to double by 2050.
  • Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations. That’s the equivalent of setting five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world.
  • Plastics often contain additives making them stronger, more flexible, and durable. But many of these additives can extend the life of products if they become litter, with some estimates ranging to at least 400 years to break down.”

Thinking about the impact that plastic has on the environment is overwhelming. According to the EPA’s website, “More than 35 million tons of plastics were generated in the United States in 2018, which was about 12 percent of the waste stream. Only 8.7 percent of plastics were recycled in 2018. Some types of plastics are recycled much more than others. Most community recycling programs accept some, but not all, types of plastics.”

What Can You Do?

Look for alternatives that will provide the same effect and let me know in the comments or tag me on social what you find. I’d love to hear and see what it is! The foam floral hoop that I suggest for this craft is made from recycled plastic which is a start! The actual foam floral hoop I use in this craft is from Michael’s and one that I’ve had for over 10 years. At the time I didn’t think eco-consciencely about my purchase but I could never part with it because I didn’t know what to do with it. Now it is a beautiful Felt Flower Ribbon Wreath!
