We did a Sesame Street theme for our daughter’s 3rd birthday. One craft I loved working on was this Abby Cadabby inspired fairy wand. I couldn’t find anything out there that spoke to me SO it was time to craft! There was quite a bit of trial and error. Some of the wands fell apart as soon as you tried to do “abracadabra”. Others were just… flat. Finally, this one came to fruition and has stood the test of time. (For now, remember kids are playing with these! :)) And I am excited to share these Abby Cadabby inspired wands with you!
If you have a fairy in your life that needs a wand then this Abby Cadabby inspired wand is for you! I’d love to see your creations so please tag me on Instagram @home.marisa

Abby Cadabby Inspired Fairy Wands
Equipment
- 1 Pair of scissors
- 1 Hot glue gun with glue
- 1 Paint brush
- 1 Pom pom stencil (in the materials section above you can download the stencil)
- 1 Printer and piece of paper
- 2 Toilet paper rolls (or other thick paper material: cardstock, cardboard)
- 1 Pencil
- 1 Stand for drying dowel rods optional
Materials
- 1 bottle Deep Lilac paint you can mix red, blue and white paint together like I did to get your desired color
- 1 piece Wooden dowel rod ¼ inch 12 inch length
- 1 spool Royal Blue scrubby yarn
- 1 spool Lemon Sparkle scrubby yarn
- 1 spool Fairy Lavender baby velvet yarn
- 1 spool Baby Blue ribbon ⅛ inch
- 1 spool Hot Pink ribbon ¼ inch
- 1 set Rhinestones SS6 size optional
Instructions
Paint the Wand
- Mix together red, blue and white paint to your desired deep lilac color.1 bottle Deep Lilac paint

- Paint the wooden dowel deep lilac. Leave about half an inch unpainted on each end so you can transfer the dowel to your stand for drying.1 piece Wooden dowel rod

- With the dowel on the stand paint the portion of the dowel facing up. Let it dry.

Make the Poof
- Make the Poof template. Download the poof stencil in the Materials section above. Cut out the stencil to use as a guide.
- Cut two toilet paper rolls lengthwise to open up the roll. Lay the cut rolls flat and sketch the poof stencil onto each.

- Cut out two poof stencils.

- Line up your yarns and ribbons. Pull roughly two feet of each and line up the ends to tie together in a knot.1 spool Royal Blue scrubby yarn, 1 spool Lemon Sparkle scrubby yarn, 1 spool Fairy Lavender baby velvet yarn, 1 spool Baby Blue ribbon, 1 spool Hot Pink ribbon

- With the knot in hand, start wrapping the yarns and ribbons around the poof stencil. Wrap the yarn and ribbons snuggly back and forth covering the stencil but not so tight that you won't be able to cut through them later.

- Once the poof stencil is as full as you want it to be leave an additional 4 – 5 inches of yarn and ribbon extended from the poof and cut the yarn and ribbon.

- Cut a 20 inch piece of yarn or ribbon of your liking.1 spool Fairy Lavender baby velvet yarn

- Slide the yarn/ribbon between the two poof stencils at the stencils' opening.

- With your scissors cut the wrapped yarn and ribbon between the two cardboard poof stencils from one end to the other.

- Trail the 20 inch yarn/ribbon behind the scissors in order to tie all the cut yarns and ribbons together. TIP: I find that holding your thumb at the center eyelet helps to keep everything together.

- Remove the stencil and poof up your poof. Shape the poof to your liking leaving the 20 inch strand of yarn uncut for the moment.

Put it all together
- Let's attach the poof to the painted dowel. Make sure your hot glue gun is on.

- Take the center of your poof where the eyelet of the poof is located. Spread the yarn and ribbon aside so you can see the eyelet. Put a generous amount of hot glue in the center of the eyelet.

- Attach the unpainted portion of the dowel into the hot glue. If you can slide the dowel through the eyelet just a little bit. Let the glue cool.

- Now you can cut the extra long yarn to finish shaping the poof.

- Cut an 18 – 20 inch piece of baby blue ribbon. Put a dab of hot glue at the base of the poof.

- Attach one end of the baby blue ribbon to the hot glue; allow it to dry.

- Wrap the ribbon around the dowel. Put a dab of hot glue on the tip of the dowel and place the baby blue ribbon on it.

- Allow the glue to dry and cut the additional ribbon off. If you like you can add another small dab of hot glue on top as to minimize fraying.

- OPTIONAL: Add rhinestones to the wand! I hot glued my rhinestones to the dowel and that was pretty difficult without the proper tools. You can do it that way too but if there is a better/easier way that you know, please do that. 🙂1 set Rhinestones SS6 size

- Yay! Your Abby Cadabby inspired wand is all done! Great job!
